As a group with similar interests and opinions, much of what we selected had the same beige tinted color scheme and almost each piece had blue within. This is significant indeed. Blue represents, intelligence, truth, stability and depth, which is an important theme. Also, the ugly art we chose was mostly of people portraying emotions of guilt, pain, shock, and disgust which all conflict with our group’s subconscious inclination towards intelligent truth and stability. Finally, many of the pieces we chose are extremely disproportionate, askew and rather awkward looking which is the perfect inverse of our theme of blue. The hints of blue in each piece though an attractive color to our group shows possibility of our initial attraction to each piece, the catch that gets us to look, and the contrasting unproportioned angst evoked in each of the pieces is what make us stay and ultimately decide that it was ugly. Overall, as a group we are attracted to the color blue, and unattracted to beige, emotions of guilt, pain shock and disgust which are all conveyed in the 25 pieces we chose. This is a general guideline in selecting ugly art for only this group, it is not a panacea formula as somebody(the artist) thought that each one of those pieces was beautiful at one time. So though we cannot create a universal outline for what is ugly and what is not we can create a rough outline of what individuals dislike and come to a common census as to what the MAJORITY dislikes. There is not one thing in this world that everybody hates, it simply does not exist and therefore we cannot make a formula for ugly. As for the beautiful, they very much contrast to our ugly, however each contains a bit of blue--the central color to our group, representing stability, intelligence, truth and proportion. Our beautiful art has symmetry, it provokes complex thought and emotions more related to love, questioning and wonder all aspects in the meaning of the color blue. The strong presence of blue in each of the 50 works we chose and its reflection of meaning on all of our personalities is imperative to our groups idea of what is ugly and what is beautiful. We enjoy a piece of work that provokes thought and emotions of proportion, wonder, symmetry with at least a dash of blue and dislike art that is unorganized and conveys emotions contrary to stability. 1) Creation of Adam - "No doubt about it, the electrification—the gap between the fingers, the sort of gap a spark could jump across...a narrow line of connection, a tangential point of contact, through which to transmit God's life-giving power—of the Creation of Adam is one of the most successful critical memes ever." - Tom Lubbock (http://ind.pn/bwp7WP) 2) Starry Night - "There is the night sky filled with swirling clouds, stars ablaze with their own luminescence, and a bright crescent moon. . .this sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving about the painting, following the curves and creating a visual dot to dot with the stars. . .[while the] movement keeps the onlooker involved in the painting while the other factors take hold." - Vincent Van Gogh Gallery (http://bit.ly/2TZu7) 3) The Thinker - "The Thinker not only confirms Dante´s high reputation as the embodiment of Plato's ideal of the artist-philosopher: on a more abstract level, Rodin's work associates the creative qualities of artistic genius with the ability to understand and judge society from a higher standpoint. Because of his central place high above the turmoil of the sinners, Elsen even draws a parallel to the figure of Christ in the Judgement Seat." - Rodinweb.org (http://bit.ly/x8BWW1) 4) The Cafe Terrace - "[It] stands as one of the painter's most remarkable works. Note how the lines of composition all point directly to the centre of the work where a horse and carriage are found. Everything seems to be drawn inward, like a vortex, and yet the overall tone suggests tranquillity and not turmoil. The overall scheme is dark, but without the slightest trace of black." - Moodbook.com (http://bit.ly/z9VHHp) 5) Girl with a Pearl Earring - "Vermeer depicted his women in thought-provoking stillness and also as encouraging images that inspired homogeny. . .with this painting the viewer is captured by the subject and believes they have caught her attention and caused her to turn her head. This is a sensual painting with the girl gazing at the viewer with wide eyes and a parted mouth and there is an air of mystery surrounding her identity." - Artble.com (http://bit.ly/yqzkYM) 6) School of Athens - "Raphael has symbolized in the dramatic gestures of the two central figures in the painting the very transcendental and metaphysical nature of Plato's philosophic thinking on the one hand, and the very "down to earth," practical nature of Aristotle's teachings on the other." - Joseph Phelan (http://bit.ly/wFcThd) 7) Pieta (Michelangelo) - "The master made the first of many trips to Carrara in search of the highest quality marble. The Pietà, which Michelangelo completed before reaching his twenty-fifth birthday, is praised for its technical brilliance and inventive triangular composition." - Lauren Mitchell Ruehring (http://bit.ly/xDJgMg) 8) The Birth of Venus - "Birth of Venus is dependent on the delicacy of Botticelli's line. The proportions show their greatest exaggeration, yet the long neck and torrent of hair help to create the mystifying figure. " - Artble.com (http://bit.ly/xgdXic) 9) Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog - "Gorra's (2004) analysis was that the message conveyed by the painting is one of Kantian self-reflection, expressed through the wanderer's gazings into the murkiness of the sea of fog. Dembo (2001) sympathised, asserting that Wanderer presents a metaphor for the unknown future." - Liam (http://bit.ly/wt1GXp) 10) M.C. Escher's Works - "M.C. Escher's art has an infallible sense of composition, a refinement of form, a distinct harmony, and an inner discipline. His prints and woodcuts reflect a tension inherent in representing three-dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. Unlike Renaissance painters who strived to reproduce a world in which image and reality were indistinguishable, Escher's recognizable images are optical illusions." - Marge Bulmer (http://bit.ly/A8z4Iw) 11) Salvador Dali's Works - "His paintings are not only surreal, they are ingenious. There are his numerous depictions of what is known as soft watches or melting clocks, his ingenious method of conveying to the reader that time is tired. The idea was according to some based on his knowledge of Einstein's theory that time is relative." - Philip Coppens (http://bit.ly/8d4tMM) 12) Typography Art - "Rhythm and contrast keep coming up when discussing good music and good typographic design. . .there are specific measurements, components, details, and proportions to describe various parts of a letter." - Carolina de Bartolo and Erik Spiekermann (http://bit.ly/g94IOd) 13) Neville Brody - "Neville Brody is both an eloquent advocate and a superb practitioner. His design talent traverses so many different media – traditional print and typography through to online and motion graphics, and packaging. He is one of the most influential designers of his generation and perfectly captures the interdisciplinary ethos of the Department of Communication Art & Design.” - Dr. Paul Thompson (http://bit.ly/aD1n0U) 14) Zhou Fan - "At first glance, it seems to be surprising that these things have been placed together – and it provides much food for thought. Yet after looking at the works and pondering them for a while, these things are painted together so harmoniously that they seem to fit together, like pieces in a fantasy puzzle." - Zhoufanart.com (http://bit.ly/xHPLym) HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
